Dry Cough usually ignored until it become more prominent. Dry cough is very painful as it produce no mucus. Because of no mucus it make the throat dry and irritated, and can damage the tissues. Dry coughing is caused by lung ailments, inflammation, inhalation of dust, and by infection, other irritants or smoke also cause it.

Chest pain, breath shortness and fever are some of the symptoms of dry cough. Common natural substances can be used as home remedies to treat dry cough, these remedies will not make you drowsy as many commercial medicine do, and these remedies will cost you more less than other over the counter medicine.

Home Remedies For Dry Cough

1. (Turmeric)

 Turmeric acts naturally as an antiseptic, and also kills dry cough causing germs.

Process 1:

  • Take 1 teaspoon honey and 1 teaspoon turmeric powder and mix them to make paste.
  • Consume this paste 4 times everyday.
  • Repeat this process daily until you get relief from dry cough.

Process 2:

  • Take water 4 cups and boil it then add 1 teaspoon turmeric power to it.
  • Stir it nicely and steep for just few minutes.
  • Now stir in honey and lemon juice.
  • To get rid of dry cough regularly drink this tea.

2. (Honey)

Honey reduce irritation and helps in throat soothing, it kills the infection causing germs because of its natural antibiotic properties.


  • Take warm water in a glass and mix 1 tablespoon honey in it.
  • Stir it nicely and drink two times a day everyday regularly to get relief from dry cough.
  • Note: you can add lemon juice or honey to tea.

3. (Gelatin)

You can also get relief from dry cough using gelatin it also soothes throat.


  • Take one glass water and heat it.
  • Take donkey-hide gelatin 5 to 10 grams and Stir in.
  • Leave it for few minutes to cool down.
  • To get relief from dry cough drink this regularly.

4. (Thyme)

Thyme helps in relaxing respiratory system, it acts also as expectorant (helps to loosen mucus).


  • Take a cup of water and boil it.
  • Now take 2 teaspoon fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme and stir in.
  • Reduce the  heat and simmer for about 5 minutes.
  • Let it to steep for about 10 minutes after removing from heat.
  • Strain it nicely, stir honey in, drink on regular basis daily.

5. (Marshmallow Root Tea)

Marshmallow root protects throat tissue damage and mucous membranes, it reduces inflammation and also acts as a pain reliever.


  • Take one cup water boil it take dried marshmallow leaves 2 to 3 grams and stir in.
  • Let it to steep for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain nicely and then drink it.
  • Drink this marshmallow tea every day 3cups.

6. (Slippery Elm)

Slippery elm minimizes coughing by coating the throat because of the gel like substance it contains, it is made from the bark of the slippery-elm tree.


  • Take powdered slippery elm bark 1 teaspoon and stir in one cup warm water.
  • Let it steep for about 10 minutes after mixing well.
  • To get rid from dry cough and throat irritation drink this warm tea.
  • Also lozenges of slippery elm bark increase saliva which moist throat.

7. (Steam)

Steam moisturize nasal passages and throat which helps reduce irritation.


  • Boil water in a pot add few drops eucalyptus oil and about 3 drops of tea tree oil .
  • cover your full head with a towel lean over at the bowl to inhale the steam.
  • Breathe the steam for a few minutes.
  • Breathe in the steam for about 5 to 10 minutes repeat this 2 to 3 times everyday.

8. (Raw Onion)

Onions help to block the cough triggering compounds and you can get relief from sore throat.


  • Take a piece of onion and mince it.
  • Extract the juice from it by blending.
  • Stir in raw honey 1 teaspoon  and then Let it to  sit for about 4 to 5  hours.
  • Now your natural cough syrup is ready take 1 teaspoon two times a day.
  • This remedy is also helpful for sore throat.

9. (Hot Milk and Honey)

To lubricate the respiratory system and throat mucus is necessary and milk produce it, to kill the infection causing bacteria honey plays its role it also soothes your throat.


  • Take 1 glass warm milk and mix 1 teaspoon honey in it.
  • Drinking this regularly will give you relief from the problem of dry cough.
  • Drink it at night to get better sleep.

10. (Oregano)

To loosen phlegm oregano is very helpful, so it can be expelled easily from respiratory system.


  • Take one cup of water boil it and stir in fresh oregano 2 teaspoon or 1 teaspoon dried oregano.
  • Reduce the heat and then  simmer it for about 5 minutes.
  • Remove it from heat and then let to steep it for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain well and then drink it.

11. (Green Tea with Honey)

Green tea is good to soothes the throat while honey has the ability fights the dry cough causing bacteria.You can buy green tea bags from most shop and make green tea and then add honey into it, or follow the process below.


  • Take one cup of water and boil and green tea leaves 1 teaspoon to it.
  • Simmer it for about 5 minutes after reducing the heat.
  • Remove it from heat and then let it to steep for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain and stir in organic raw honey for taste and drink on regular basis.

12. (Aniseed)

Aniseed also helps to loosen the mucus and then it will be easily expelled from respiratory system.


  • Take one cup of water and boil it then stir in fresh aniseed leaf 3 tablespoon or dried aniseed leaf  1 tablespoon.
  • Simmer it for about 5 minutes after reducing the heat.
  • Remove it from heat and then let it to steep for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain and then drink it.
  • Or alternatively try fennel & licorice-spice tea

13. (Raisins)

To soothe the throat raisins are helpful they are rich in natural sugars and also good for dry cough treatment.


  • Take raisins ½ cup, sugar 1/3 cup, and water 1 teaspoon mix them in a blender to make a paste.
  • Pour this mixture in a sauce pan and then heat to a sauce like consistency.
  • Then let it to cool for few minutes.
  • Before going to bed take 2 teaspoon every night.

14. (Ginger and Basil)

Ginger is helpful in fighting the dry cough causing germs and also soothe the throat, while basil has the natural ability to get relief from pain.


  • Take 4 fresh basil leaves and chopped ginger root 2 tablespoon in a tea-mug.
  • Pour into it one cup boiling water and then let it to steep for about 10 minutes.
  • Strain well and then drink it.

15. (Sea Salt Gargle)

It is good for absorbing dry cough causing bacteria and also soothes the throat.


  • Take a mug of water and heat it stir in sea salt 1 teaspoon.
  • Then take a mouthful and gargle for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Remember to spit it, and be careful not to swallow it.

16. (Gentle Coughing Technique)

Non stop violent coughing is bad for throat it creates irritation in throat, it will cause further coughing and damage. Try to control your cough if possible, a few small gentle coughs will help to move mucus forward, then a big cough will expel mucus.

Other Tips to Treat and Prevent Dry Cough

  • While sleeping elevate your head, it will be helpful in reducing dry cough.
  • Drinking water and other fluids vegetable and organic fruit juices are also good for dry cough.
  • To add moisture to dry air use a humidifier
  • Taking vitamin C and A are helpful in dry cough prevention and immune system support.
  • Drink grape-juice or eat grapes with a teaspoon of honey.
  • Eating ginger slices with sea salt sprinkled on it is also helpful.
  • Take 10 almonds soak in water for all night remove the skin the following morning, then grind them and add butter and sugar 20 grams each to it, take this two times a day.
  • Drink carrot juice or eat carrots about 4 -5 times a day, to get relief from dry cough because of the vitamins and nutrients in carrots.
  • Take and mix honey and apple cider vinegar in equal portions and take 2 teaspoons before going to bed.
  • Develop the habit of drinking herbal tea to sooth throat.
  • Regular eating of garlic is also good.

Consult your doctor if have a dry cough for longer than 10 days. You can use these methods as prevention even after the cough is gone.
