Dry scalp, flaky or itchy scalp. Frequent shampooing, dandruff, eczema, and certain health condition are the causes of scalp infection and dry scalp. In winter it is very common because the scalp dries because of dry weather or dry become more drier.

To keep the scalp moisturized sebaceous glands  containing in our scalp produce oil. most of the factors described above disturb the oil production which may cause for the scalp to dry.

 Frizzy hair, flaking and itchiness are the causes of dry scalp. Hair follicles become weaken in the absence of moisture and the hair fall increases if  dry scalp not treated on time.

Moisture in the scalp must be maintained to treat dry scalp. You must do some diet changes or try some home remedies to maintain this moisture.

How to Treat Dry Scalp at Home

Dry scalp treatment can be done by most natural ingredients, below is the list of the remedies to treat dry scalp at home select the one which work best for you and you feel easy to try regularly.

1. (Tea Tree Oil)

Anti fungal properties of tea tree oil kills the dry scalp causing bacteria. When you add tea tree oil to the conditioner or shampoo it will soothes the scalp.

Process 1:

  • Take tea tree oil 6 drops and add it to your conditioner or shampoo.
  • Rinse your hair and scalp by using this mixture.
  • Regularly repeat this process.
  • For best results you can also use tea tree oil based shampoo.

Note: You can use jojoba oil, eucalyptus oil, argan oil, or peppermint Oil instead of tea tree oil. Don’t heat essential oil but apply to the scalp directly. If essential oils strong nature can not be tolerated by your scalp then using natural oils or carrier oils dilute them.

Process 2:

  • Take tea tree oil 5 – 10 drops and combine it in water of enough amount.
  • After shampooing wash your hair using this solution.
  • Regularly repeat This process.

Process 3: Essential Oils Blend

  • Take lavender oil 2 to 3 drops, rosemary oil 1 to 2 drops, tea tree oil 4 to 5 drops, and neem oil 2 to 3 drops and combine them.
  • Take any carrier oil 1 teaspoon and add it to the essential oils and then you have to stir well.
  • Massage your scalp using this mixture gently.
  • Rinse using mild-shampoo after leaving for overnight.
  • Follow this remedy 2 times every week.

2. (Coconut Oil)

The best way for treating dryness and retaining lost moisture is oiling. This process locks the moisture content, supply essential nutrients, enhances the circulation of blood to blood and hair follicles, and encourages the natural production of oil.

  • Take coconut in enough quantity and warm it.
  • Apply the oil using cotton ball or fingers along the hair and throughout the (scalp).
  • Massage gently using your finger for few minutes in circular motion.
  • Leave this application for at least 60 minutes to overnight.
  • Using a shampoo rinse the application off. For effective results use a mild shampoo.
  • Follow this oil remedy for 2 to 3 times each week.
  • Instead of coconut oil, you can use caster oil, olive oil, or almond oil alternatively.

3. (Apple Cider Vinegar)

Apple cider vinegar plays an important role in the balancing of skin pH level. Scalp infection causing bacteria can be wiped out by its antibacterial properties. You will notice a decrease in flaking and itchiness of scalp with a single wash. To nourish the scalp the essential nutrients plays its role.

Process 1:

  • Take apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup and combine with same quantity of water.
  • Take a few minutes to massage the scalp after the application of the mixture.
  • Leave this application for ten minutes.
  • Take a shampoo containing teal tree oil and rinse your hair.
  • Follow this process on regular basiss.

Note: You can use apple cider vinegar without mixing with water on your scalp directly only if the strong nature of it can be handled by your scalp.

Process – 2: Apple Cider Vinegar Spray for Dry Scalp

  • Take water about 3 cups and boil it now take a handful of rosemary and add into it.
  • Let it simmer and cover it for about for 45 minutes.
  • Remove it from the heat and strain it.
  • After it become cool add then add 10 drops each of the peppermint oil and rosemary oil and  apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup.
  • Take a spray bottle and pour into it after stirring well.
  • After washing the hair spray this solution.
  • Leave it on or rinse it off as you like.
  • Follow this process regularly.

4. (Witch Hazel)

If your blow drying or hair coloring products are the main cause of your dry scalp then you can et relief from it using witch hazel. To treat itchy scalp the inflammation is reduced by its natural astringent properties.

  • Take witch hazel one part and and water two parts and mix them.
  • Apply thoroughly this solution onto your scalp.
  • For 5 – 10 minutes gently massage it.
  • Thoroughly rinse the hair and scalp.
  • Follow this process one time in three to four days.

5. (Lemon)

Lemon has both moisturizing and antiseptic properties. The excessive of dead cells can also be removed by it.

Process 1: With Honey

  • Extract the juice of fresh lemon by squeezing it.
  • Mix well after adding honey to it.
  • Massage for a few minutes on your scalp gently.
  • Rinse off with shampoo and water.
  • Use water and shampoo to rinse your hair.

Process 2: With Coconut Oil

  • Take coconut oil one cup warm it and then add lemon juice just a few drops.
  • Apply to your scalp and leave for at least an hour.
  • Leave for 60 minutes after applying to the scalp.
  • Take a warm towel and wrap your hair for a while.
  • Wash your hair after removing.

In place of coconut oil you can use any essential oil.

Process 3: With Fuller’s Earth or Multani Mitti

Fuller’s Earth works as natural moisturizer for hair. And works more effectively when combined with coconut oil and lemon juice.

  • Whisk enough quantity of coconut oil  and lemon juice with fuller’s earth one cup.
  • Leave for 60 minutes after after application of this paste to the scalp.
  • Use shampoo and water to rinse your hair,.
  • Repeat this process regularly.

6. (Mayonnaise)

Because of egg in mayonnaise it gives nourishment to the the scalp.The vinegar of mayonnaise fights with itching and dryness causing bacteria and disinfect the scalp.

  • Take mayonnaise 1/2 cup and apply it on the scalp.
  • Concentrate on hair roots massage your scalp.
  • Take a shower cap and cover your hair leave it for for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Now wash the hair as you normally do.
  • Follow this remedy two time in a week.

7. (Honey)

Honey acts as anti-viral and anti-inflammatory and this is very effective to treat dry scalp.

Process 1: With Olive Oil

  • Take virgin olive oil 1/2 cup and warm it then mix it with honey 2 teaspoon.
  • Gently massage after applying it to your scalp.
  • Leave it for about 10 minutes to sit.
  • Use herbal shampoo to rinse.
  • To effectively hold the moisturizer cover the scalp using hot towel.
  • Alternatively, olive oil can be used in place of coconut oil.
  • Follow this remedy regularly.

Process – 2

  • Take pure honey 2 teaspoon, pure vegetable glycerin 2 teaspoon, and extra virgin olive oil 4 teaspoon and mix them.
  • This mixture must be applied as a conditioner after shampooing your hair.
  • Also you can combine regular conditioner with honey.Mix honey 1 part with conditioner 2 parts.
  • Follow this remedy regularly.

Process – 3

  • Take a lemon and squeeze its juice.
  • Take some honey add to it and mix it well.
  • Gently massage it on the scalp.
  • Rinse with water after a few minutes.

8. (Egg Yolk and Olive Oil for Dry Scalp)

Some time only the oil massage is not enough for scalp. The combination of olive oil and egg yolk helps in hair follicles nourishing, scalp conditioning, and treat dry scalp.

  • Take water few drops, olive oil 2 teaspoons and 2 to 3 egg yolks in a bowl and add them.
  • Whisk this well.
  • Damp your hair.  (Not completely wet or not dry).
  • The mixture should be applied along the hair on the scalp.
  • Leave it for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Use lukewarm water and rinse off your hair.
  • Almond oil or coconut oil can be used instead of olive oil.
  • Follow this remedy one or two times a week.

Things to Remember

  • Do not rinse your head using hot to remove egg application.
  • You can get rid of the smell of egg by adding few drops of essential oil to remedy.
  • After egg treatment conditioner  application to the hair must be avoided.

9. (Aloe Vera for Dry Scalp)

The aloe vera properties of cleansing, moisturizing, and cooling helps to treat dry scalp.

  • Take aloe leaf extract aloe vera gel from it.
  • For even consistency blend the gel .
  • You can add essential oil few drops into it but its optional.
  • Apply this mixture along the hair and on the scalp.
  • Rinse off using water after leaving it for 20 minutes.
  • Follow this remedy regularly.

Alternatively: Freshly extracted aloe vera gel can be added into conditioner and shampoo. Or otherwise rub on the scalp the rind of aloe vera it also have many nutrients.

Note: avoid using aloe vera if you have a cold body or more prone to cold. The aloe vera cooling effect spreads not just the scalp but to the entire body.

10. (Avocado)

Avocados are rich in natural oils, minerals, and vitamins which help to treat dry scalp. It also makes hair moisturized, glossy, and soft.

  • Take one ripe avocado and mash and mix with extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoon and honey 1 teaspoon.
  • Apply the mixture to dry hair. Cover with a shower cap and then leave  for about half hour.
  • Use water and mild-shampoo to wash your hair.

11. (Sugar Scalp Scrub)

 This process is helpful in the removal of dryness causing accumulated dead skin.
  • Take sugar (if possible brown) 5 teaspoon and mix with any oil you like or olive oil.
  • Apply this scrub by gently massaging in circular motions on your scalp.
  • Now wash your hair as normally.
  • Follow this remedy reglarly.

12. (Beer Treatment)

Process – 1:

  • Mix apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons with beer 2 cups.
  • After shampooing your hair apply this mixture.
  • Follow the process regularly.

Process – 2:

  • Take dark beer eight ounces and jojoba oil a few drops and mix.
  • Leave for 15 minutes after application to your hair.
  • Use warm water to rinse it off followed bay a shampoo.

13. (Coconut Oil, Grapefruit, and Lemon Juice Mixture)

This process helps in treating dandruff along with removing dryness.

  • Take some organic coconut-oil and warm it for a few seconds.
  • Then leave it to cool down and its temp become equal to room temperature.
  • To extract the grapefruit juice blend it.
  • Also take a fresh lemon and squeeze its juice.
  • Now mix the lemon juice with grapefruit juice.
  • Add the juice 2 teaspoons to the coconut oil.
  • Gently massage it on your scalp and use a hot towel to wrap your head
  • Wait for 15 minutes for it to sit and shampoo your hair as normal.
  • Follow this remedy regularly.

14. (Tea Tree Oil)

White flakes and dryness causing bacteria can be vanished by anti-fungal properties that teat tree oil contains. By adding it to conditioner or shampoo it soothes the scalp.

  • Mix tea tree oil 6 drops in your conditioner or shampoo.
  • Use the mixture to rinse your hair and scalp.
  • Follow the remedy regularly.
  • Note: To get effective results tea tree oil based shampoo can be used.

Alternatively:  Mix tea tree oil 5 to 10 drops with water, wash your hair using this mixture after shampooing. Follow this remedy regularly.


15. (Listerine)

  • Take baby oil and Listerine 1/2 oz each and combine.
  • Stir it well.
  • Use a cotton ball and apply it along the hair and on the scalp.
  • Leave for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Use water and shampoo to rinse it.
  • Follow the remedy everyday for a week until you notice the result.

16. (Treating Dry Scalp with Herbs)

Process 1: With Thyme

You can either use sage leaves, rosemary, or thyme for this process. These herbs have good effect on controlling hair fall, itchy scalp, and treating dry scalp.

  • Take dried thyme 2 teaspoon, water 2 cups and add them.
  • Boil this mixture and then take away from heat.
  • Reduce the temperature of thyme tea to warm.
  • Gently Massage while applying this tea to your scalp.
  • Use water and shampoo to rinse after leaving for 15 minutes.
  • Alternatively, instead of thyme you can use rosemary  1/2 cup or sage leaves 1 cup.
  • Follow this process 2 times each week.

Process 2: With Lilac, Basil and Henna Leaves

Henna, lilac and basil leaves contain antifungal, antibacterial and  antiviral properties which help to treat itchy and also treat dry scalp.

  • Combine  henna leaves, lilac leaves, and basil leaves 1 cup of each.
  • Now blend and take the mixture out in a bowl.
  • Add coconut oil 6 cups into it and boil the mixture.
  • Remove from heat when the color become brown
  • Strain the oil when it cool down and use a bottle to store it.
  • Leave it for 60 minutes after applying the oil to the scalp and then use water and shampoo to rinse.
  • Follow this remedy everyday

Process 3: Stinging Nettles

Iron is in rich quantity in Stinging Nettles. Its use also help to treat dry scalp, flaky and itchy scalp.

  • Boil water 1 1/2 cup (one and half cup).
  • Take dry nettles  1/2 cup and add it to boiling water for few minutes let it simmer.
  • Now add lavender, sage, and rosemary 1 tablespoon of each into it.
  • Remove from heat after simmering for five minutes.
  • Strain & consume while hot.
  • Follow the remedy once every to treat dry scalp.

For added benefits: Add peppermint oil 4 – 5 drops into the tea and using this mixture rinse your hair every time you shampoo hair. in storing the tea for 6 months Peppermint oil helps. So you can make and store a large amount of tea for regular use.

17. (Dried Herbs Rinse)

Instead of commercial shampoos you can use the following process.

Process 1:

  • Take water 2 cups and boil then remove from heat.
  • Take 8 to 10 thyme leaves, 10 to 12 comfrey leaves, and 5 calendula flowers and add into boiled water. Make certain that all are properly dried.
  • Let it to steep and cover it.
  • Gently massage on the scalp and leave for 20 minutes.
  • Use water and shampoo to rinse.
  • Follow this remedy one time each week.

Process 2:

  • Take rosemary, yarrow, red clover, budrock, stinging nettle, and thyme, 2 tablespoons each and also take white vinegar 1 teaspoon, apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup, and witch hazel 1 to 2 tablespoon and add in a jar.
  • Put this jar for 5 week in a dark and warm place, and shake this jar one or two times everyday.
  • Use a cheese cloth to strain the liquid.
  • Add olive oil 10 – 12 drops and water 3 – 4 teaspoons into it.
  • Apply to your scalp in enough quantity.
  • Use water to rinse it after leaving for 20 minutes.
  • Follow this remedy 2 times per week.

18. (Oatmeal)

Vitamin found in oats treats itching, flaking, and dryness and nourishes the dry skin.

  • Take water  1/2 cup and oatmeal powder 1 teaspoon and combine them.
  • Stir well and the mixture and gently massage on the scalp.
  • Wait for 30 minutes and leave it.
  • Use cold water and rinse your hair.
  • Follow this remedy 2 to 3 times every day.

19. (Baking Soda)

Baking soda treat dry scalp, and also controls dandruff if overactive fungi is its cause. It exfoliates impurities and dead skin from the scalp.

  • Take olive oil and gently massage for few minutes onto the scalp.
  • Make paste by combining enough water with baking soda 3 teaspoon.
  • Take this paste and apply to the scalp.
  • Leave this for about 20 minutes.
  • Rinse it by using water.
  • Follow this remedy 1 to 2 times every week.

20. (Sea Salt)

Skin barrier function can be improved by magnesium present in sea salt. It is also helpful in reducing inflammatory conditions like (psoriasis).

  • Take Epsom salt or dead sea salt 1 teaspoon and blend into powder.
  • Take coconut oil 1 teaspoon and add onto it.
  • Mix the mixture well and gently massage onto the scalp.
  • Wait for 5 minutes and leave it.
  • Use water and shampoo to rinse off.
  • Instead of coconut oil olive oil can be used.
  • Follow this remedy 1 or 2 times each week.

21. (Onion Juice)

The antifungal and antibacterial properties of onion juice provide relief from itchy and dry scalp. To nourish the scalp onion provides sulfur, magnesium, geranium, potassium and vitamins.

  • Take one or two onions grind and extract the juice.
  • Take onion juice 3 teaspoon and combine with olive oil 1 to 2 teaspoon.
  • Take this mixture and apply to scalp.
  • Wait and leave it for about 30 minutes.
  • Use water to rinse.

22. (Fenugreek)

Fenugreek provide volume and shine to your hair, and also treat dry scalp.

Process 1: with Honey

  • Take honey and fenugreek powder 1 teaspoon each and combine.

Process 2: with Amla

  • Take 2 gooseberries deseed.

26. (Green Tea and Beetroot)

  • Take 1 beetroot and chop it into pieces.
  • Take dried green tea leaves 1 teaspoon and chopped beetroot and add into one cup water.

  • Blend the green-tea leaves  and beetroot.

  • Take water 4 cups and boil.

28. (Hibiscus)

  • Take hibiscus leaves and flowers 1/2 cup of each, and add to two cups of water.

  • Use a cotton ball and apply his liquid along the hair and on the scalp.

29. (Coconut Milk)

Coconut oil has vitamin E which helps in preventing itchy and dry scalp, and best for hair growth.

  • Grate 3 cups of coconut and extract coconut milk from it.
  • Put the coconut milk in refrigerator for all night and in the morning take it out.
  • Take gram flour 1/4 cup and add into coconut milk.
  • Leave it for about 30 minutes.
  • Now take this paste and apply on the scalp.
  • For 20 to 30 minutes massage the scalp gently.
  • Use a shower cap to cover your head.
  • Use water and shampoo to rinse after leaving it for about six hours.
  • Follow this remedy regularly to treat dry scalp.

30. (Neem)

Neem have antiseptic, antifungal , and antibacterial properties which prevent the release of histamine and provide relief from dryness.

Process 1: Neem Leaves

  • Take neem leaves 1 cup and water 2 cups and combine.
  • For about 20 minutes simmer the mixture.
  • Leave it to cool down after removing from heat.
  • Grind the leaves into a paste after straining.

31. (Watercress)

  • Take watercress one cup and crush it.

Dietary Changes to Prevent or Treat Dry Scalp:

 Healthy diets are also best for hair growth and also change the scalp and hair condition.
  • Include in your daily diet foods like whole grains, eggs, fruits, and leafy vegetables for protein content.
  • Omega-3 hydrates skin scalp and is found in its cell membranes. Spinach, salmon, flaxseeds, walnuts and so on are rich in Omega-3.
  • Consume Vitamin C and B rich foods.
  • Foods rich in iron and zinc must be included.

  • Extreme temperatures exposure like harsh winters and direct sunlight must be avoided.
  • Don’t leave conditioner or shampoo in your hair for a longer time.
  • Dry scalp can also be triggered by too much stress, to reduce stress do meditation or yoga.
